Skiddle visits Great Ormond Street to mark it’s partnership with the hospital’s charity

Our team recently paid a visit to Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH), Skiddle’s latest charity partner, to see how they provide for their patients and to learn of their plans for the hospital’s future. 

From the bronze statue of Peter Pan at the hospital entrance, paying homage to JM Barrie, who donated the rights from his famous children’s novel to ensure perpetual support for seriously ill children, to the colourful features of its interior and Europe’s largest Disney installation outside of Disneyland Paris, the outdoor Disney Reef – it’s clear from the outset that this hospital is unlike any other in the UK.

Recognising that some children’s stays at GOSH are longer than others, the hospital has implemented measures to ensure that its young patients can maintain as normal a life as possible. This includes offering school services to help them continue their education and even sit for exams.

Our tour also included a visit to St. Christopher’s Chapel, a historic and unique building used for worship, ceremonies, and weddings. Remarkably, it is the only listed building ever relocated and now serves the spiritual needs of the hospital’s occupants. With its exquisite brickwork and stained glass windows, the chapel’s 140-year history stands beautifully preserved, offering a place of prayer for people of all faiths.

Earlier this year, GOSH Charity launched its biggest ever fundraising appeal to help build a world-leading new Children’s Cancer Centre at GOSH, to help drive transformation in children’s cancer care and save more lives. It will be built over the next few years and will feature various upgrades on the existing facilities including a Cytotoxic Pharmacy, a daycare unit with increased capacity, holistic care to improve patients’ wellbeing and livelihoods and there will also be greater capacity for clinical trials.

It’s important to note that while the NHS covers operational costs like staff salaries, bills, and rent for Great Ormond Street, GOSH relies on donations to support everything else. Fundraising plays a critical role in sustaining institutions like GOSH. 

As of the 1st of August, Skiddle has facilitated donations at checkout, with £1 being split between Great Ormond Street Hospital and Alder Hey, providing vital funding for exciting new projects at both institutions.
