What to expect from Beyond The Music 2023

Beyond The Music comes to Manchester from the 11th to the 14th October. 

Founded by Oli Wilson, son of Tony Wilson, the multi-day event will bring together several speakers, all to enrich the music industry in Manchester and the UK. 

With conferences in the afternoon and live music in the evening, venues like Manchester Central, The Midland, Halle St Peters, Stage & Radio, Band On The Wall and more will host panels, talks, discussions and gigs across the four days.

What can I expect from Beyond The Music?

Lots of panels, talks and live music. 

Beyond The Music takes place over four days. On each of the days, the conference part will centre around a different theme. Wednesday 11th is titled ‘Past’, featuring a panel titled ‘The Last Supper’, described by the organisers as ‘Manchester legends hand over to the next generation’. It’ll run from 6 pm to 11 pm, taking place at The Midland Hotel’s Trafford Suite.

Thursday 12th will see a packed day of panel discussions centred around the theme of ‘Present’. You’ll get an insight into the economics of music and learn what a music company should look like in 2023. There are some esteemed speakers here. NQ’s Michael Adex and industry legend Keith Harris OBE will present the keynote, while the Ivors Academy’s Tom Gray, Supernature’s Andy Musgrave, CTRL Music’s Nadia Khan and Mother’s Maria Torres will appear throughout the day alongside many others. 

Elsewhere, Rita Ora and Sarah Stennett will deliver a keynote talk, and the late afternoon part of the event will cover Independent Venue Week, music outside of the capital and how we can move towards net zero by 2050.

On Friday 13th, the subject revolves around ‘Future’. You’ll be able to see panel discussions on the creation of a UK Parliament for the music industry and how independent venues can thrive in the age of Instagram and TikTok. Black Music Coalition’s Sheryl Nwosu and Char Grant will join Motown’s Areya Hentry-Fontaine and AWAL’s Komali Scott-Jones to discuss their experiences of being Black women in the industry, while Mark Davyd will appear on a panel looking at grassroots music. 

Saturday 14th is titled ‘Inspire’. Dedicated to opening the conversation around access to music, you’ll be able to view panel discussions that focus on developing a career in the industry, getting paid fairly and developing your social media presence as an artist, label or manager. 

From Thursday to Saturday, venues around the city will host a range of live music. You’ll be able to see the likes of Tommy Villiers, The Orielles, Werkha and a host of Manchester talent in Akemi Fox, Just Banco, Abnormal Sleepz, Geko and more.
