Getting to Know the Winners of the Skiddle Promoter Fund: Jamieson Pomeroy

For those of you who might have missed it, at the close of the summer, we announced and opened applications for our Skiddle Promoter Fund, a bursary scheme which aims to empower the next generation of event planners based in the UK, by awarding grants of up to £1000 to help bring their event ideas to life.

Applications have now sadly closed (but that’s not to say we won’t be running similar funds in the not-so-distant future) and some of the events we’ve helped to fund have already taken place! One of our successful applicants, whose party took place this week, is Jamieson Pomeroy, a Leeds native with years of experience operating in the northern music scene, having previously worked with renowned brands and venues the likes of Pryzm Leeds, Rekom UK and Voodo Events.

In the lead-up to his event, we managed to grab a few minutes with Jamieson, to learn about his local scene, to ask why he decided to apply for the Skiddle Promoter Fund and to discover how the fund will help his brand going forward. Read the full interview below.

Tell us a bit about your event and your local scene:

“Leeds is a big boy. After dark, the place really comes alive with some of the UK’s most respected independent venues, not to mention the big chain venues, and promoters offering something for everyone. From the commercial sounds of big room EDM to alternative and Drum n’ Bass, it all happens every night. Promoters from Leeds have gone on to take over other cities, they’ve organised festivals for thousands of people and our DJs are booked country-wide. Not bad for Yorkshire.”

Do you feel as though there is enough financial help for promoters?

“In short, no. Personally, I’ve worked for some of the biggest names in nightlife. But, I couldn’t do it on my own due to the lack of investment and support in someone like me. Starting a promotions company is seen as something people used to do, and the people who do it now are going to be stuck in small venues with only their mates to rely on to fill the space. I know of many who with the right backing and support would be able to start something massive and most importantly, different to the norm.”

“Having the backing of a brand like Skiddle solidifies our reputation and will mark our future events as ones worth attending.”

What made you decide to apply for the Skiddle Promoter Fund?

“Having left nightlife, I wanted back in. Anyone who’s worked in the industry knows how infectious it is. Yes, we moan about the late hours and the cold (especially up north) but everyone loves it. For me, the chance to be given backing to go and start my own brand and promotion company was a no-brainer.”

Tell us about what you plan to do with the money from the fund?

“From DJs to adverts and print, everything in promotion costs money. Social media only gets you so far but with the grant, we can now tap into multiple channels to market our nights. We’re also able to consider booking more established DJ names who bring a bigger following, meaning the brand has an instant pull with guests in the local area!”

How will the fund help your club night or brand going forward?

“Having the backing of a brand like Skiddle solidifies our reputation and will mark our future events as ones worth attending. The fund will also allow us to create a first night that has success beyond what we could do on our own, hopefully snowballing into bigger and bigger events! Catch us running festivals in the future!!”
