Inspired By Music: The concept behind Skiddle and GigPig’s Next-Gen Industry event

On the 20th March, we’re collaborating with our good mates over at GigPig to bring you Inspired By Music. It takes place at Manchester’s Band On The Wall, bringing together DJ Paulette, Danny Fahey, Jonny Wharton and Jemma Tanswell, who’ll each share insights about their careers with our host Victoria Jane. It’s designed for up and coming industry professionals to get a feel of what it’s like to be working in the music and events world.
Afterwards, guests will be able to ask questions, chat with our panel guests and network with their fellow attendees. We’ve also got a free bar for those who choose to stick around and mingle once the panel has finished.
But before the event takes place, we wanted to pull back the curtain. You might be thinking: why did we choose to put this event on?
Well, here at Skiddle, our offices are made up of creative people who’ve been involved in the music and events world. Whether that’s playing at gigs in bands and at clubs as DJs or putting on gigs, club nights, festivals and culture events as promoters. Often, the events our staff have put on have been independent. So, we know what it’s like when you’re just starting out. It can feel like you’re making it up as you go along.
For some, that’s part of the fun, and we agree to an extent. At times, the brightest sparks of creativity come from a daring idea. But being able to access advice, insight and knowledge about the creative industries as a newcomer can make the process much easier.
Speaking to Skiddle, Scott Forrest, Events and Partnerships Manager at GigPig told us: “The concept is simple. We’ve all navigated our way into this industry for the same reason: Our love for music. It’s what drew us into this industry from the get-go.
Music has the power to change how we see the world and bring people together from every corner of the globe. Inspired By Music is our opportunity to support the next generation, Inspire and empower the young professionals who will carry the torch forward.”
On partnering with Skiddle, Scott told us:
“Partnering with Skiddle was simple. Our values align. We both have humble beginnings with similar goals. That being to support the local promoters, artists and creatives in our community. I’ve had a great experience with Skiddle ever since I started as a promoter 12 years ago. It’s plain to see that Skiddle are there to support the smaller independent producers, just as much as the bigger players.”
Inspired By Music also fits into our ‘More Than A Ticket’ ethos. With an event like this, we’re helping the industry grow. Not just by selling tickets, but by providing people with low-cost and valuable experiences that will help them professionally and personally.
And what made us pick the panel guests?
The main thing is variety. Take DJ Paulette, for example. She’s long been known as one of Manchester’s best selectors, and she’s got a wealth of knowledge in the industry.
Contrast that with Danny Fahey, who’s worked on several creative projects across several industries. Jemma Tanswell has an encyclopaedic knowledge of radio, thanks to her work as Director of Manchester’s Reform Radio. Finally, Jonny Wharton has delivered audio-visual setups for some of the UK’s biggest events.
We’ve got knowledge throughout different eras and disciplines of the music, event and creative industries at Inspired By Music. To succeed in this game nowadays, you’ve got to be adaptable, and the mixture of insights from our guests will ensure that attendees get the full spectrum of advice and knowledge. This will be key in assisting them on their journey as budding event and music industry professionals.
Scott explains that “The amazing panel guests have been carefully picked to cover the depth of the industry and in the first half, we’ll be taking a look at their journeys and what are the pivotal moments in their careers. Ultimately, the theme is Inspiration and I can guarantee the audience will leave feeling that way. There will also be a lot of tips and pointers to support the audience in their chosen creative outlet.
“We wanted to represent the different sectors of the industry with the panel lineup. From musicians and producers, to sound engineers and promoters. Giving the audience a taste of the avenues into the music industry, encouraging them to find their own niche. Each panel guest is a master and expert in their field with a real wealth of experience. Each guest brings a fresh perspective on the music industry and I believe the more perspectives you have the better.”
