Everything You Need to Know About Event Design
In the world of wedding planning, there are different types of businesses. Some planners are logistics-focused, others are planners/designers, and then some are event designers exclusively. You might be wondering what exactly an event designer does for their clients? What are their responsibilities? What services do they offer? Event designers are often referred to as event decorators, event stylists, wedding stylists, or wedding designers. In this blog post, we will outline what an event designer does and if you should add this service to your planning business.
An event designer is responsible for creating the overall atmosphere of a wedding or event. Event designers work with their clients to decide how they want the guests to feel when they enter the ceremony site. From the moment they arrive at cocktail hour to their overall experience at the reception, the designer makes the day look cohesive and beautiful. This involves many moving parts and pieces that all come together to turn the client’s vision into a reality.
Event and wedding design is a highly creative field. Having a background in design or an eye for color isn’t enough to become a good designer. Like with wedding and event planning, you will work with clients to hone their ultimate goals and style. Then you will bring their vision to life so that every decor element and all the logistics work together seamlessly to create a cohesive theme and vibe.
Some of the services and responsibilities of an event designer:
Often, event design is assumed to be included with wedding planners’ services. While some planners have an excellent eye for detail and can help with design, a true event designer has a specific set of skills. Some event designers come from the interior design world or even have an art background. If you want to become an event designer, some programs and certifications can be earned to hone your skills.
While there is no required education to enter this field, hands-on experience is invaluable. If you want to join the event designer space, consider working or interning with an established designer for a season. Not only will you get first-hand knowledge of the industry, but you will also have the chance to learn and determine if this is the direction you want to take with your career.

Start with research if you are an established wedding planner who wants to add design services to your existing packages. Have your clients been asking for this service? Do you feel confident that you have the design experience to execute these new services? Could you hire someone for the design role instead of taking it in yourself? These are all questions to ask when thinking of adding dedicated design services to your planning business.

Whether you want to start an event design business or add design services to your existing planning business, an event designer takes a unique set of skills. Make sure that you can meet the needs of your clients and enjoy your work. As with anything in the wedding industry, not all the work is glamorous, but finding the right clients can be extremely rewarding!
