Checking-IN reveals its 50 LGBT+ Hospitality Champions List 2023

Checking-IN, the LGBT+ hospitality network, revealed its first 50 LGBT+ Hospitality Champions List last week, Wednesday 31st May at a reception at the InterContinental London Park Lane.

Following an open call for nominations, Checking-IN was overwhelmed with entries from the hospitality sector, and heartened to hear about the incredible initiatives and support for the community that make the industry a welcoming and inclusive place to work. The list, which was chosen by a panel of independent judges, themselves hospitality professionals, includes a diverse range of roles and locations, from senior role models to people at the start of their hospitality journey who are already making their workplaces more inclusive for colleagues and customers alike.

Just a few notable names on the list are:
Melissa Thompson, an award-winning food writer and live-fire cook who has penned powerful articles on the British food industry that became focal points for important discussions around identity, diversity and inclusivity.
Chris King, Thunder & CEO of Lightning Travel Recruitment who is a great advocate and activist for the trans and non-binary community both in their work and their social media presence.
Aisha Shaibu-Lenoir, Founder of Moonlight Experiences and a trailblazer in the travel and hospitality industry. As an entrepreneur and LGBT+ activist, Aisha is behind multiple ventures, projects and companies that uplift minority voices and advance LGBT+ equality and inclusion.
Jarry Glavin, the well-known face of Circa Bar in Soho and Circa Embankment and a co-founder of Angel Gyms, a safe space for queer and trans people and anyone who would normally feel anxious or intimidated in a gym environment.
Rachel Rumbol, the passionate and talented individual behind QFAB (Queers in Food & Beverage) and chef at Butch Salads, a contemporary London catering company.

Announcing the list, Checking-IN co-founder Liam Rezende says:

“An inspiring celebration of diversity and inclusion, the inaugural list of LGBT+ champions in hospitality by Checking-IN shines a light on those making a profound impact. This remarkable moment underscores the significance of community, visibility, and action in fostering an inclusive industry. While we honour these champions, it is essential to recognise that they represent only a fraction of the hundreds of other extraordinary people advancing LGBT+ inclusion and equality within hospitality.”

Adds co-founder Will Davies:

“While this launch coincides with the start of Pride season, it’s crucial to acknowledge the troubling reality of LGBT+ progress backsliding worldwide. By recognising and uplifting the accomplishments of these exceptional individuals, let us stand in solidarity and amplify the voices of all those striving for equality and acceptance. Together, we can create an industry that welcomes and celebrates every individual.”

The compilation of the list and the celebration event at InterContinental London Park Lane on Wednesday 31st May were made possible by the generous sponsorship of Caterer.com, IHG Hotels & Resorts, Whispering Angel and HBD Partners.
