UNT to Offer Bachelor's Degree in Event Design and Experience Management Beginning This Fall
4/19/2021
DENTON (UNT), Texas — Beginning Fall 2021, the University of North Texas College of Merchandising, Hospitality and Tourism will offer a Bachelor of Science in event design and experience management. As the first event- and experience-related bachelor’s degree in Texas, students will receive the education and training needed to step into the rapidly evolving events industry, which is poised to grow by 9% between 2019-2029. “Almost everything we do now in hospitality and tourism is about the experience,” said Kim Williams, professor and chair for the Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management. “We’re taking it a step further to give students a holistic understanding of all aspects of event planning to make sure they have the knowledge and skills to execute a flawless experience for guests.” In this dynamic and experiential program, students will learn from top CMHT researchers and explore the latest trends in events and design experience including sustainability and technology. Students will earn event-related certifications and develop proficiency in innovative event technology and software as part of their coursework. Through collaborations with partners across the university such as the UNT CoLab, the student-run restaurant The Club at Gateway Center and UNT Dining Services, students will engage in real-life event planning and management experience. Along the way, there will be optional study tours to major travel destinations around the world where students will be immersed in leading events in the industry. At the culmination of the program, students will plan and execute a large event. Like many business sectors, the events industry has shifted tremendously during the last year due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Professionals now need to know how to manage a successful in-person event and also how to develop an engaging virtual experience — or balance the two simultaneously in a hybrid event, Williams said. CMHT faculty members are actively engaged in the industry and will ensure students stay up-to-date on industry trends and are prepared for versatile careers in hospitality, government and corporations, or to work as an entrepreneur paving their own way. With CMHT faculty being members of industry groups such as the International Association of Exhibitions and Events, Meeting Professionals International, Professional Convention Management Association and Society for Incentive Travel Excellence, students will have opportunities to connect with events industry leaders and organizations through class field trips, conference attendance, guest speakers, jobs and volunteer positions.
