Volunteer Week: Joe Marcy, CMP, CITP, CMM

By Joe Marcy, CMP, CITP, CMM | Apr 30, 2023

My personal volunteer story.

I became a member of Meeting Professionals International (MPI) in 2009.  I had just been promoted and my boss strongly encouraged my involvement.  I didn’t know much about industry associations, but I trusted her judgement.  Looking back, I realize it was a life changing moment that shaped my future.

I immediately got involved with the Southern California Chapter of MPI.  My first task was to help execute their annual fundraiser.  I learned a lot and met wonderful people.  Soon after, I officially became a board member.  I served for 7 years before I became president.

I was quite young to lead such a large organization.  With good mentors and a strong board, we exceeded expectations.  It was challenging in the best way possible.  Growth comes with experience.

In 2019, I received one of the greatest honors of my life, the MPI RISE Award for Member of the Year.  I’ll never forget that moment.  It fueled my ambition and drive to do more.

I joined the MPI Foundation Global Board of Trustees (GBOT) in 2021.  I couldn’t be more grateful tor the opportunity.  Not only do I get to work with people that inspire me, but I get to make a global difference.  The work the foundation does is incredible.  Our industry has been through a lot.  In good times and in bad, the foundation has offered support to chapters and its members.

All the skills I learned through MPI were transferrable in my everyday life.  Whether in my career or community work, I’m a better leader because of MPI.

What made you want to volunteer at MPI? Or why you chose to start volunteering.

Sometimes all you have to do is ask.  The MPI Southern California Chapter felt like home.  A diverse community with common goals.  We had a strong desire to protect and expand our tribe.  Volunteering didn’t feel like an obligation, it felt like a privilege.

What ROI have you gotten since volunteering for MPI?

It’s been extremely rewarding both personally and professionally.  The education has kept me relevant.  The networking opportunities brought business to our destination.   The relationships turned into lifelong friendships.  The skills were transferrable and helped me make a difference in my hometown.  It all comes full circle.

I want to thank the Monterey County Convention & Visitors Bureau for understanding the value of MPI.  The investment is invaluable.

What inspires you to continue to serve?  What makes volunteering with MPI special?

There are two things that motivate my service.  People and results.

The people bring me so much joy.  They may not realize it, but they instill inspiration and hope just by being authentic.

The results are gratifying.  Fundraising for the foundation has translated into much needed financial support.  While we’ve achieved so much, there’s more work to be done.  We’re just getting started.

Expectations versus reality of volunteering

Don’t expect overnight results.  You get what you put into it.

If you invest in MPI, it will be fruitful.
