The Meetings Industry Association (mia) has welcomed Nigel Collett, director of 1 Wimpole Street, to its board as vice chair.

Nigel was officially voted into the position during the mia’s latest council meeting earlier this month.

He takes over as vice chair from Rowan Kitching, director of events at the Honourable Artillery Company. Rowan officially stepped down from the role at the mia’s Annual General Meeting in March ahead of her impending maternity leave.

Nigel has been on the mia’s council for two years and has extensive experience working within the business meetings and events market.

He joined London conference and meetings venue 1 Wimpole Street as director in 2005 after building up over 30 years’ experience in hospitality, catering, meetings and events at businesses such as the Honourable Society of Inner Temple, The Brewery, Hyde Park Hotel (now Mandarin Hotel), The Hurlingham Club and Citigroup. He was also named UK Catering Manager of the Year in 2004 by Cost Sector Magazine.

Inspired by the development of event technologies, Nigel is keen to stay ahead of the curve and remains open to new developments to ensure the meetings and events industry remains relevant and useful to the next generation of meeting and event attendees.

On his new appointment, Nigel said: “It has been an honour to serve on the board of the mia as a council member, so I’m excited to be able to use my experience to help steer the association further forward as vice chair as it continues to grow in size and importance.”

Kay England, chair of the mia, said: “We are fortunate to be able to benefit from Nigel’s expertise and knowledge of the industry as he takes over this important role from Rowan, who we wish well as she starts her maternity leave.”
