The Meetings Industry Association (mia) is encouraging the business meetings and events industry to use 20 percent less single-use plastic with a new high-profile campaign.

Being championed by mia chair Kay England (pictured), the #20PercentLess initiative that aims to reach caterers, hotels, venues and suppliers in the business meetings and events industry across the UK, will kick-off with a roundtable next week.

The roundtable will be the industry’s first debate focusing on the issues and opportunities facing the sector and will set the agenda for the campaign that will share best practice through a dedicated white paper.

Confirmed panellists for the discussion facilitated by Custard Communications’ Petra Clayton, include: Clean the world’s Pierre Daigneault, Green Tourism’s Jon Proctor, Cascade Productions’ Jennifer Houlihan, Inntel’s James Smith, Zoological Society of London’s Rachel Shairp, 15 Hatfields’ Warren Campbell, Eden Caterers and #Refill’s Hugh Walker, The Lensbury’s Ivor Turner, mia chair and Imago’s Kay England, mia chief executive Jane Longhurst and M&IT’s Paul Harvey.

The debate will take place on 24 October at London’s 15 Hatfields– central London’s most sustainable venue – which has a zero waste to landfill as well as a strict ‘no bottled water’ policy preventing one million plastic bottles being dumped into the ground. Refreshments and lunch will be supplied by Eden Caterers, who are committed and have been widely recognised for following, improving and promoting good sustainability practices.
