In her buoyant, unique style, prominent health advocate Zonya Foco urged participants at Smart Meeting South Central National in New Orleans to take a closer look at their dietary habits.

Conflicting messages about healthy eating can cause confusion, said Foco, a TV chef, dietitian and writer, in her keynote address, “Light Beer and Baked Doritos—Am I healthy?” on Monday. But she offers one basic guideline.

Eat real foods,” she said. “It may take you out of your comfort zone, but it’s where magic happens.”

She outlined three major benefits to eating real foods.

1. They eliminate the bad stuff, such as trans fats, deleterious additives and preservatives such as MSG, artificial colors, sodium and sugar.

2. They skyrocket the good stuff, including antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, fiber and potassium.

3. They decrease calories naturally.

She offered a few ways of identifying the bad stuff.

“Look at the labels to know what you’re eating, she said. “And never eat foods with ingredients you can’t pronounce—except quinoa.”
