Houghton Festival organisers have decided to cancel the event that was due to take place at Houghton Hall this weekend.

The decision came after Boardmasters was cancelled due to similar concerns and makes Houghton the second major music festival to be cancelled this week due to bad weather.

In a statement published on the festival’s website, organisers said “weather conditions on-site at Houghton Festival have dramatically worsened and are set to deteriorate further into the weekend.

“Tragically, following this morning’s (8th August) reports and further consultation with authorities, health and safety and all the festival directors, the decision has been made to cancel Houghton 2019.”

Weather warnings for Houghton have been issued for rain and wind, with gusts expected to reach 50mph.

Organisers, Craig Richards, Tom Elkington, Tom Carpenter and Digby Neill, said the decision was made with “the deepest consideration” and have advised fans not to travel to the show and refunds will be available later today.

Houghton Festival, near King’s Lynn, Norfolk, was expected to attract up to 10,000 visitors. It was to take place from 8th-11th August and had promised acts such as Ricardo Villalobos, Four Tet and Shanti Celeste.

Mimi Aynsley from North London had already travelled to the festival before she heard the news. She said: “It’s really hard not to be annoyed about it. It’s really quite warm outside. We want the weather to be bad tomorrow just so there’s a reason for it to be cancelled.”
