The categories I looked at are extremely wide. It is like comparing oranges with apples in some cases. Comparing a get together with friends and a 20,000 attendee convention is the same exercise, yet they are both events. I highlighted only the features that matter to make a quick decision if you are unsure about what to pick for live streaming events.
I spent as much time as possible on all of them. In some cases, I used free trials, when not possible I’ve seen online demos and/or attended them in person. The following analysis is personal and represents my opinion. By no means it is indicative of the value of the app.
Here are the scoring criteria for each tool:
Platform Compatibility. Is the live streaming app available on Desktop and Mobile? Mac, PC, Android and iOS?
Event Tool. What features of the live streaming app are appealing to event professionals? Does it have purpose-built tools for live streaming events specifically?
Advanced Features. How complex is the platform? Does it offer video uploading, monetization, video on demand, pay per view, multiple bitrate handling, etc? This is where to best quality live broadcasting apps come to the fore.
Integration. Does the live streaming app offer integration with popular broadcasting software or popular social networks?
Virality. Social media friendly live streaming apps offer the biggest chance to go viral. How is the streaming app likely to create a viral opportunity for your content to spread? Is it a closed or open environment?
Usability. How easy is the platform to use? Is the user experience pleasant? Does it walk you through how to live stream?

Mainstream Live Streaming apps
These are apps tied to major social networks. They are part of companies that are household names such as Google, Facebook or Twitter. These apps represent an entry point for the individual user but are also part of the social media mix of large events. They offer more sophisticated event tools in some instances and they are largely offered as completely free live streaming apps.

These apps are in between the social networks platforms and the more advanced live stream apps. They offer entry-level tiers of pricing and they are rarely free. They offer in most cases they have the ability to stream on your website without having to connect to social networks. They can offer quite sophisticated and enterprise tools.

Facebook Live is the tool that most of us have used and that has democratized live streaming, making it accessible and popular. Facebook Live makes live streaming easy. It has a super simple platform that is easy to use whether you are on mobile or desktop.
It is one of the most integrated with platforms you will find. If you are using live streaming enabled devices or live broadcasting software, they almost certainly integrate with Facebook Live.
Pros:

The platform has quite advanced features and it offers one feature no other platform offers, the search potential of being on Youtube, powered by Google.
Pros:
- Immense search potential. Listing your live event on Youtube has no rivals. You also get the benefit of adding the stream as a standalone video once it is over.
- Quite advanced and event specific features such as broadcast delay, live chat and automatic recording.
- Caters for individual streamers as well as more advanced events requirements (Youtube Stream Now vs Youtube Events).

- Lacks critical mass and hence the potential virality for the live product that Facebook has.

Instagram Live is a much younger initiative compared to Facebook, Youtube and Twitter, yet it is one with high potential for virality. We are talking about a user based live streaming app. There is no presence whatsoever of advanced tools or event planning features. Yet, as many attendees engage with Instagram pages, having a live component from the backstage of your event or your actual event can have a quite significant potential.
The features are very limited with two-person streaming just being introduced to the platform. Once again this confirms the long tail strategy of Instagram, with Facebook serving more complex event iterations.
Pros:
- If Instagram is important in your social media mix, look no further, the potential is huge.
- You will get more organic exposure. There are multiple reports that confirm the algorithm favoring live streamers.
- The platform is very simple and usable making a great alternative for social media staff at events to use.
Cons:
- Too basic and limited. Instagram Live is a simple tool with simple features.

The platform suffers from the lack of traction Twitter is having in general, with Facebook being the more successful alternative users prefer. Having said that, if Twitter is an important component of your social media strategy, then Periscope definitely helps to get more eyeballs on your tweets.
As Twitter is navigating more towards a Facebook style, algorithmic display of updates that is not time bound but displays highlights for longer periods of time, you have an opportunity to display your stream recording for longer.
Pros:

Livestream has been one of the first to launch an actual device integrated with the platform, the MeVo camera. It offers a free version of the software that integrates with Facebook Live, Periscope and many other platforms. The features are quite advanced and very event friendly.
Pros:

Cons:

It has the credit to have brought a new concept to the masses. It offers an incredible array of tools, integrations, features, as well as innovative concepts such as peer to peer payment. I mentioned many times in the above reviews ‘broadcasting apps or software’. This is software that works on the backend and usually does the work of connecting your camera to a production studio adding more features, multiple cameras, lower thirds etc.
Some of the above tools do offer these capabilities but they can come at a very high price point. Two tools stand out above the rest for incredible value for money to achieve basic needs of simple live streaming setups are listed below.

What you need here is one piece of free software called Open Broadcaster Software or OBS. This is a very rudimental tool that does an incredible amount of stuff and can satisfy many needs.
