To get somewhere, you have to know where you are starting from. A new survey from the Events Industry Council (EIC) is measuring sustainable practices, goals, and barriers in the global business events industry.

The business events industry includes the participation of 1.5 billion people in 180 countries and is the 22nd-largest economy in the world, ranked by the $1 trillion in direct spending the industry supports, according to the 2018 Global Economic Significance of Business Events report by EIC.

It’s time to leverage that strength, according to the EIC, and “come together to secure a long-term, sustainable, and resilient future for our industry, our communities, and those we serve.”

In January, the EIC unveiled  “Four Principles of Event Sustainability,” which were created by a multi-stakeholder group convened during IMEX in Frankfurt and Las Vegas in 2018 and were endorsed by more than 60 associations and companies, including PCMA. The principles are aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

As the next step, EIC has launched a 2019 State of Sustainability in the Events Industry Survey to take the industry’s pulse. Industry professionals are invited to participate in the 10-minute survey to help provide a baseline on where the global meetings industry stands in relation to sustainability issues including the environment, social justice, and ways that the industry supports a diverse and inclusive environment. The data collected also will be used to identify trends, opportunities, and barriers to advancing sustainability in the industry. Results of the survey will be presented at IMEX America next month.
